From Saturday, April 4, to Sunday, April 12, the Czech men will fight for the best possible position at the 2009 World Curling Championships. This year's championships will be held in Canada in the small town of Moncton, an hour's flight from Montreal. The fivesome of Jiří Snítil, Martin Snítil, Jindřich Kitzberger, Karel Uher and Miloš Hoferka, along with coach Sun Frederiksen, will be cherishing their hopes of making the Czech team for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Friday will be devoted to training sessions and meetings between players and umpires and organizers. In the evening, the official opening of the tournament will be held, which will have a particularly festive atmosphere as this is the 50th Men's World Championship. The first World Championship (1959, Scotland) was actually just a five-way match between Canada and Scotland, which was then confidently turned into a title by the Canadian family foursome, the Richardsons. The women didn't start competing at World Championship level until twenty years later than the men.
