Hong Kong

On July 1, 1997, the status of the area known as the New Territories (Hong Kong, New Kowloon and Lantau) changed. The Sino-British Joint Declaration used the term "PRC Special Administrative Zone" for the region as part of the signed agreement. The author of the formulation is Teng Xiao Ping, a socialist economist, who thereby brought into being a concept called One Country, Two Systems, which is also applied to Taiwan and Macau. In accordance with the philosophy presented, the Chinese concept of the economy should not be applied in Hong Kong for fifty years, i.e. until 2047. However, shortly before the halfway point of the period during which the two economic systems are supposed to converge, significant changes are taking place which herald a destabilisation of the situation. A law was put into effect today that criminalises certain acts relating to subversion and subversive activities, as well as collaboration with foreign forces that threaten the security of the country (meaning China). The potential penalties are severe. They include life imprisonment and many years in prison. More systemically significant, however, is that under this law, Chinese security forces can be placed in the area and some sinners can be tried by the Chinese system. Carrie Lam, the city administrator, defends the whole process, saying the law restores stability to society. However, protests against Chinese hegemonism are coming from all over the world, for example from the USA and the European Union. To help Hong Kong citizens, a special office has even been opened in Taiwan to assist with any relocation from one city to another. The tensions in this area of the world are long-standing, persistent and persistent. Human rights issues are often overshadowed by economic interests, however problematic and unfulfilled. It is high time to take a trip there and experience the atmosphere for yourself. Miloš Vystrčil could be an ambassador.
