"We played well," commented Canada-Czech Republic national coach Jim Waite, and when asked what happened on the morning the Chinese beat the Canadian team in overtime, he shrugged and mentioned that the ice wasn't ideal and that they don't like this set of rocks (read: yellow on the ice). Well, Canadian. After six ends, the Czechs gave up at 6-1. In lane B, David Murdoch finally threw the last stone on the tee, averting the threat of losing to the Aussies. The Scots are holding on to their semi-final chance and David's parents are nervously running around the stands cheering. Patrick Huerlimann was absent from Switzerland's match against Australia this morning as he was a candidate for the WCF executive board. It didn't pay off for the team - they lost by a stone; Patrick's presence at the meeting probably helped his re-election. During the coffee break he gossiped a bit about his own skip, which probably explains the unconvincing performance of the Swiss team. Debbie Mc Cormick, who sells at the curling shop here, was disappointed with the American women's placing in Vernon, so I just nodded sadly and commiserated with her. China is in an hour, so hopefully it will work out!
