The Men's World Junior Championship has been officially played since 1975 and the women's category was added in 1988. At this year's one, in the men's category, the Canadians did not complete their mission and lost to the Danes in the final 6 to 9. The Danish team, led by skip Rasmus Stjern, was the better team in the game and especially at the skip position, there was a visible difference in performance. The Canadian Gallant played very well throughout the tournament, but his last step did not work out. In the women's category there was a new distinctive phenomenon by the name of Eve Muirhead and Sarah Mac Intyre. These two Scottish women (Eve is the daughter of successful curler Gordon Muirhead and sister of junior representative Glen) are already triple world champions! This year Eve led her team to victory over a good Canadian team skipped by Kaitlyn Lawes. Eve with her last stone behind the center guards did not allow the Canadian to score the needed deuce and it was decided. The bronzes go to the Americans (skip Chris Plys) and the Swiss (skip Martina Baumann - did not play in the last game). The World Junior Championships had an excellent sporting standard and was certainly marked by the fact that it was held in the hall where the Olympic curling tournament will take place in less than a year. Our representatives - the girls' team of the Czech Republic - left a very good impression and, most importantly, brought the Czech Curling Federation success in the form of direct qualification for the 2010 World Junior Championships (Switzerland, Flims).
