Writing about something today that doesn't involve Covid 19 seems almost inappropriate. I have test-run the TV news channel several times at different times, waiting to see how long it will be before I hear the word coronavirus or shroud. I think in virtually all cases it was immediate, immediate, or immediate. One time it was immediately and one time it was a little later. Viral contagion is a topic that is gradually destroying the economies of less economically literate countries, taking with it into the abyss even those that have at least a somewhat workable prescription. The issue of the virus is also depressing us mentally and no one is actually defending us. It is strange how easily life on the globe can be fundamentally changed and the fate of billions of people boiled down to a single issue, which is the threat of contracting a disease that has last year's date. Every day we hear about new or changed measures to protect us from contagion. However, doubts are slowly creeping into our souls as to whether the guidelines are based on an analysis of reliable data, whether the proposed procedures are not simply a response to pressure from a section of the public brought on by e-mail appeals, or whether they are not even simply copies of regulations used elsewhere in the world for God knows why. However, what permeates society quite visibly is sadness, scepticism, fear, depression and resignation. I am sure that it is the duty of today's politicians to awaken optimism, faith in the future, desire and passion in the citizens. And to articulate everyone's personal responsibility, perhaps by saying: "I will behave responsibly, but no one will force me to behave in such a way as to damage my own or anyone else's mental health, or to abuse and harass myself and those around me." I'm having a hard time finding anyone in the public arena who will take up that order, but I firmly believe that someone will be found.
