10.11.2022,

Let's get ready slowly.

We are still a few weeks away from the elections for municipal councils (including Prague) and 1/3 of the Senate of the Czech Republic. And the next elections are already knocking on the door. Presidential. These are the elections that go beyond our purely parliamentary application of democracy. The citizens will vote, for the third time in a row. Evaluating the previous two attempts to find the ideal president of our country is not easy. On the one hand, it seems very mature to let every citizen with the right to vote directly express his or her opinion by casting a ballot, and thus to get a realistic mosaic of the population's inclinations. On the other hand, it demeans the mandate of the elected person somewhat into the role of a representative of the broadest strata, somewhat in spite of the legitimately elected representatives in the elections for the representative bodies. It would seem that this creates a kind of necessary counterpart to the parliamentary-approved and controlled government of the country. But systemically it is not supposed to be that distinct. If we are looking for a balanced organisational structure for the legislature and the executive, the ideal situation is a resilient parliamentary majority, with a vigilant, constructive opposition that understands that it is probably next in line to run the country and so is not purely destructive. A Senate populated by respected personalities, capable of its own, albeit structured, opinion, would be a good fit. The necessary and indispensable umbrella for the whole edifice is the president and his team. We would like him to be stern, fair, kind, generous, decisive, cooperative, helpful, and smart to boot, a little funny, occasionally insistent, and always trustworthy. All in the feminine, of course. But these are exaggerated wishes that can be described as wishful thinking. It's enough if he's at least a little better than the last president. And that shouldn't be that difficult.

The elections will be held on January 13 and 14, 2023. The second round, if the first round is not decided, will be held two weeks later. There are plenty of candidates to choose from. So let's get ready slowly.
